A Little News from the Farm

A few things happening here you might want to know:

  • Posting is going to be pretty sparse for a couple more weeks.  This is because we had someone run our satellite internet bandwidth allocation over the top, and now we are being punished by the ISP with v – e – r – y slow speeds.  I’ve seen download speeds at less than…. 100 bytes/sec.  Not kilobytes, not megabytes – bytes.  Doing anything is painful, and most attempts at bringing up a webpage simply time out.  I’m lucky to be able to post these few blog postings.   I’m putting my solar-powered DSL project higher in the queue so I can get off this damned satellite connection.
  • One season passes, another begins.  No more asparagus, but a lucky few got the first our our summer squash last week, and at least a few more will get it this week.  By next week, there should be plenty for everyone.  By October, you’ll all be asking, “When will it ever stop?!?”  Other signs of summer (aside from the 90°+ temperatures): tomatoes and peppers on the vine, and flowers on the eggplant.  Can’t say for sure when they will all be ripe, but it’s mighty nice to see them there.
  • Somehow the fruit gods must be gracing us, as the unusual rain we had last week didn’t result in all the cherries splitting.  Bings in the box this week.

CSF?

CSF stands for Community Supported Fishery, which is for fishing what CSA is for agriculture: a subscription to the local catch.  We recently signed up for the Monterey Bay Local Catch CSF program, and are pretty excited about it.

We received our first “box” (actually a nice insulated bag) last week – Chinook salmon filets – and they were delicious.   We are anxiously awaiting this weeks catch, which is likely to be sablefish, rockfish, or Dungeness crab.  They have a variety of subscription options, and have a local pickup site right in Ben Lomond.  We’ll keep you posted for a while on how this all works out, but in the meantime, visit their website here.
